Namibian summer heat is dry heat, and dry heat behaves differently from the humid kind. Sweat evaporates almost as fast as you produce it, which sounds like good news until you notice how quickly you dehydrate and how stiff a badly chosen fabric feels by the end of the day. These five hold up.
1. Linen
The obvious winner, and it earns it. Linen’s fibres are hollow and loosely woven, so air moves through the cloth instead of sitting against your skin. It creases — that is the trade, and it is not a flaw. A linen shirt that looks slightly lived-in by lunchtime is doing exactly what it should.
2. Cotton poplin
Tightly woven, smooth, and far more forgiving than linen if you need to look pressed. Poplin holds a shape through a working day and takes the dust without showing every mark. It is the safe choice for anything with a dress code.
3. Viscose and lyocell
Plant-based and much cooler than they look. These drape in a way cotton cannot, which is why so many summer dresses are made from them. Worth knowing: they are weaker when wet, so wash cool and never wring them out.
4. Cotton-linen blends
The compromise, and often the sensible one. You keep most of linen’s airflow and lose most of its creasing. For trousers in particular, a blend outperforms either fibre on its own.
5. Fine merino — yes, really
Wool in summer sounds wrong until you have worn a lightweight merino tee on a long drive. It regulates temperature in both directions and resists odour better than anything else on this list, which matters on trips where washing is not an option.
What to avoid
Polyester and acrylic trap heat against the skin and hold onto smell. Thick denim is fine in the car and punishing on foot. And anything with a full synthetic lining will undo whatever the outer fabric was doing for you.
Check the care label before you check the price. In this climate the fibre content tells you more about whether you will actually wear something than the cut does.
